Blog Assignment #3: Campus Event- Phil Ponce

Phil Ponce has a lot about to say Mexican immigrants (and immigrants in general) settling in America for the first time. He vividly recalled how he left to go to Chicago. He discussed how settlers who would each sell very different kinds of food from Mexico set up bodegas. One part of his speech I found very intriguing was how he was able to see a president come to Chicago. A reporter he really admired happened to be right in front of him as the president was speaking. This is when he first knew he wanted to go into news. Now, he is a reporter/political mediator for the show “Chicago Tonight” on WTTW.
This helped me understand a few of the topics we discussed in class. For example, the news/media in general is something that Americans really value. To hear how awed Ponce was at the news industry was very interesting. He also addressed a subject that hits home for many people: illegal immigration. He gave an example of butterflies that would come from Mexico all the way to Chicago. He pointed out that they were never asked for their green card. Even though this was humorous, it made a good point about how we view foreigners, whether they are butterflies or people.
